Why are the new tyres so shiny?

Category: Car components

…And does that make them slippery?

Tyres are made by Pirelli exclusively for F1. The tyres are formed in a mould that has a chrome finish to help release the tyre, a process that produces a super-smooth, glossy, finish.

The shine is superficial and is scrubbed off by the time the car has travelled the length of the pit lane so there is no risk of slipping or sliding.
