F1 cars have a limited amount of componentry to use over the course of a season so racing is about speed and strategy over the course of the weekend and the season. To manage the life of the Power Unit, the teams can select a predetermined engine mode to extract maximum power with minimum stress for a particular session or sector of the track.

Qualifying is a short session where maximum power is required and in 2018 Lewis Hamilton to it as Party Mode, and the name stuck.

“Our quali mode is the most fun mode – it should be the ‘party’ mode,” he said at the time. “It is the most power and has the most juice, and it’s when we hit the highest speeds.”

Today there are restrictions on the use of an engine map in qualifying.
