The tarmac runoff is a relatively new alternative to gravel traps. The tarmac option uses high grip compounds, applied in stripes with increasing grip level, to arrest the car’s speed if it was to leave the track. 

The downside is that if the car’s wheels are locked up and it skids across the runoff area it will cause significant damage to the tyres and likely require a pitstop for a fresh set. However, this is a better option than being beached in a gravel trap

Also, the tarmac runoff looks cool.
