Pole

Pole (Pole Position) is the first grid box closest to the start line. The rest of the field lines up, in pairs behind the front row, being pole and the car in the second spot.

Having pole gives the advantage of having a clear run down to the first corner, provided the driver gets a clean getaway from the line. Drivers further down the field are much more prone to being caught up in an incident if someone stalls or as all the cars converge on the first corner.
