A driver may choose to brake late for a corner to complete a passing move on another car. By braking late, he goes deeper into the corner while the other car is braking on his mark and therefore getting ahead. 

This is all the more challenging in F1 giver the cars are already being driven to the limit so braking late is pushing them further and subjecting the car to a potential lock-up, skid or contact with another car. Remember, a car travelling at 325 kph is covering approximately 85 meters every second…
