The skill of the F1 driver is the ability to push the car to the limit, corner after corner and lap after lap.

As the driver approaches a corner (up to approximately 88m per second) he knows exactly where he needs his car to be and when to brake to get through the corner in the shortest amount of time and maximise acceleration as he exits.

To gain an advantage over the car in front, he might brake slightly later, allowing his car to go deep into the corner, gaining the advantage and unsettling his competitor for a moment, to take the lead.

This is referred to as “going deep”.
