As teams field two cars, it is crucial that the cars both finish the race and maximise points for the team. At times this can be conflicted by an individual driver’s world title pursuit.

The strategist may issue team orders, or alternatively, they may decide that the drivers are free to race. In the latter scenario, the drivers are free to ‘get their elbows out’ and race to see who comes out in front. This can be a high-risk strategy as, if the cars come together, one or both may be knocked out of the points altogether.
