Each team has two cars and two drivers with garages side by side but one pit box between them.

The cars are timed to run through the pits and use the pit box at different times, but on occasion, there is a need to bring both in at once with the second car waiting behind the first. And thus the term ‘double stack’.

Formula 1 is all about fractions of seconds so having a car waiting in the pits is not ideal. However, there can be situations, like during a Safety Car, when the best option for the second driver is to wait for a couple of seconds.

And remember, a decent pit stop is 2.2 – 2.6 seconds…
