One of the most recognisable flags in motorsport, the checkered Race tracks have long used flags as a way for marshals to communicate with drivers. The colour and meaning of... signals the end of the session and therefore the end of the race. T
he first car to cross the line after the flag is waved is the winner, and the cars line up in the order that they cross the line after that. Cars that are a lap or more down are counted after the cars on the lap ahead of them have crossed the line.
Whether in practice, Qualifying (Quali) is a one-hour session used to determine pole position and the order the cars will line up behind... or the race, cars are allowed to complete the lap they are on but they are not allowed to start a new lap.
