One of the most recognisable flags in motorsport, the checkered flag signals the end of the session and therefore the end of the race. T

he first car to cross the line after the flag is waved is the winner, and the cars line up in the order that they cross the line after that. Cars that are a lap or more down are counted after the cars on the lap ahead of them have crossed the line.

Whether in practice, qualifying or the race, cars are allowed to complete the lap they are on but they are not allowed to start a new lap.
