A brake check, also known as a brake test, occurs when a driver deliberately brakes hard when moving in front of another vehicle, intending to cause the behind driver to take evasive action.

Because F1 cars don’t have brake lights, the drivers need to trust their fellow competitors to drive consistently. 

Brake checking unquestionably would be considered erratic or potentially dangerous. A driver who did that, assuming they didn’t cause an accident, would be black-flagged.
