Academy drivers

Williams Academy : formula1.com

Academy drivers, development drivers or junior drivers are signed to a team as part of the team’s programme to identify and nurture future drivers. This will often include significant financial support as well as immersion within all aspects of the team.

Academy drivers are often picked up in carting and supported through the junior formulas, with a select few obtaining a coveted F1 seat. Like all drivers, the academy drivers are contracted and have obligations back to the team. This may take the form of media duties, sim driving or filling a practice session requirement.

The following F1 teams currently run an academy programme.

  • Alpine Academy – Alpine F1 Team Driver Programme
  • Ferrari Driver Academy – Scuderia Ferrari Driver Programme
  • Mercedes Junior Team – Mercedes AMG Petronas Driver Programme
  • McLaren Young Driver Programme – McLaren F1 team Driver Programme
  • Red Bull Junior Team – Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri Driver Programme
  • Sauber Junior Team – Alfa Romeo Racing Driver Programme
  • Williams Driver Academy – Williams F1 team Driver Programme
