When a driver knows he will not improve he will back off to preserve the car for the next attempt at a flying lap.

This is a term that is used in pre-race sessions where a team is attempting a flying lap to gauge the pace of the car or set the fastest time in qualifying.

Reasons for aborting the lap may include the tyres not being in the window, another car getting in the way or a driver error.
