Verstappen leads Red Bull 1-2 as Ferrari falter in action-packed Imola race

Max Verstappen won a dramatic wet-dry Emilia Romagna Grand Prix over Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez as Ferrari couldn’t deliver on home turf – Charles Leclerc spinning late on to finish sixth after Carlos Sainz retired.

The Dutchman topped Saturday’s Sprint and led off the line on Sunday, team mate Perez joining him at the front – while Leclerc momentarily dropped to fourth. The Safety Car emerged on the opening lap as Daniel Ricciardo tipped Carlos Sainz into the gravel and out of the race for the second Grand Prix.

Verstappen snatches P1 from Leclerc in thrilling Imola Sprint

Max Verstappen won the first Sprint of 2022 having passed Charles Leclerc with two laps remaining, to ensure a first-place start for Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Friday’s wet qualifying session set the grid for this Sprint, Verstappen having taken pole position over Leclerc with Lando Norris leading Kevin Magnussen off the second row. An overhauled format now sees points awarded to the top eight rather than the top three – even more incentive to give it all on Saturday afternoon, under clouds spitting with rain…

2021 F1 World Champion

Max Verstappen carries the driver’s title into the 2022 season, winning it over Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the last race of a thrilling 2021 season.

The race was subject to controversy over the way the safety car was managed following a late crash by Nicolas Latifi. However, after initial challenges, both lewis and Mercedes conceded that Max had earnt the crown.

The title defender has the right to race in the following season using the No 1, which Max has elected to do. His official number is 33.

The title may have been won on the last lap of the last race but it was earnt over the course of the season. Two drivers entered the race on 370.5 and only one could emerge the winner.
